vSphere: Learn About VMware’s Virtualization Platform

vSphere is VMware’s server virtualization platform for creating and managing virtual machines. Find out everything you need to know about it: history, features, different components…

In the field of computer science, Virtualization is the creation of virtual machines. instead of using physical machines. Increasingly in vogue in the era of Cloud Computing, this technology has many advantages.

In particular, it reduces the costs associated with the purchase and use of computers and servers, allows for the simultaneous use of several operating systems, and enhances the security of a company’s computer system. VMware is the forerunner and market leader in virtualization and is recognized as a global reference in the field of virtualization. Its main product is the vSphere.

vSphere : what is it ?

vSphere is VMware’s server virtualization platform. Launched in 2009, it succeeds VMware Infrastructure the flagship product of the American firm.

This platform allows create and manage large-scale virtual machine infrastructures. It is also sometimes referred to as a virtualized data center platform, or a cloud operating system.

The vSphere’s main competitors are other server virtualization tools such as Microsoft Windows Server, Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization, or the open source Xen hypervisor. However, the major advantage of vSphere is its popularity. Numerous technical articles, videos and other content available on the web make it easy to find help when needed.

What are the different tools in the vSphere suite?

The vSphere platform brings together several distinct products and technologies that work together to provide a complete virtualization infrastructure. These products include the ESX / ESXi hypervisor, VMware vCenter Server, VMware vSphere Client, and VMware VMFS.

The ESXi hypervisor

The ESXi hypervisor is the heart of the vSphere. It is a Type 1 hypervisor that can be used to controle launched on a host computer to manage the execution of virtual machines. It also allows you to allocate resources to virtual machines according to their needs.

He’s available as an installable version, or as an integrated version. The installable version can be installed on the hard disk of the host computer, just like any operating system. The built-in version, on the other hand, is pre-installed directly on the host computer’s memory by its manufacturer and works like firmware.

The vCenter Server

The vCenter Server is a server application running on Windows Server installed on a virtual machine. Indeed, vCenter is the central point for creating virtual machines.

It is from this centre that users can start and stop virtual machines and manage vSphere environments.

The Customer vCenter

The vCenter Client, on the other hand, is a Windows application that allows you to access vCenter Server features remotely. This tool is the most used tool of the vSphere for environment management.

The VMFS

The last major component of the vSphere, the VMFS (Virtual Machine File System). It is simply the file system used by vSphere to manage resources virtual machines are made available to the virtual machines.

The VMFS allows to create Data Stores to access the physical disk. It is then possible to create volumes on these Data Stores, in order to make disk space available for virtual machines.
