Rackspace: what are the different Cloud services?
The various services of Rackspace Cloud include Cloud Files, Cloud Block Storage and Cloud Backup. Available since 2008, Cloud Files is based on OpenStack Swift object storage.
Users connect to it through the REST API, and are billed according to usage. Specifically, users pay according to the amount of incoming bandwidth and storage.
We find the usual functionalities of Cloud services such as replication, mobile access and guaranteed uptime. Users can manage their use of the Cloud through an online control panel, PC software or various third-party tools that can connect to the Cloud Files API.
The Cloud Block StorageThe new version, available since 2012, is based on OpenStack. It is a direct competitor of Amazon Elastic Block Store, the block storage service of Amazon Web Services. This service offers superior performance to object-based storage. It combines HDD and SDD hard drives.
I mean, come on, Rackspace Cloud Backup allows you to make backups (backups) of files. Through the use of compression, deduplication and encryption, security is maximized while storage costs are minimized.
How Rackspace contributed to the OpenStack project
OpenStack is a free and open source Cloud Computing platform, mainly deployed as IaaS (infrastructure as a service). It is a project co-founded in 2010 by Rackspace and NASA.
In 2010, Rackspace chose to contribute to the Apache OpenStack project by providing the source code of its Cloud Files product. This code was used to create the OpenStack Object Storage component.
Subsequently, in April 2012, Rackspace announced that OpenStack Compute would be the technology behind its Cloud Servers product.. Following this change, it updates a new control panel as well as new Cloud services for databases, server monitoring, block storage and virtual networking. In addition, in 2015, two Rackspace executives were elected to the board of directors of the OpenStack Foundation.
SHIFT: After the discovery of the MDS flaws on Intel processors, Rackspace issued a press release. The hosting specialist states :
Our top priority is to protect the Rackspace platforms and the environment of our customers. Where appropriate, we will deploy or make available updated Intel firmware and patches developed to mitigate the vulnerability as these patches are released. In general, we recommend that customers update their operating systems and/or software as soon as relevant patches are available.
The rift endangers many Cloud infrastructures. Other vendors have reacted in this way.
