The French company PeopleDoc offers Human Resources solutions in SaaS (Software as a Service Cloud) format. As its name suggests, the platform mainly allows to centralize all documents related to Human Resources from multiple sources and systems to simplify their management.

The PeopleDoc Story

The PeopleDoc story begins in 2007, on the campus of the prestigious HEC business school Business School in Paris. First, Jonathan Benhamou and Clément Buyse created Novapost with the idea of offering a unified digital file management system.

Subsequently, in 2009, the two co-founders of PeopleDoc decided to respond to a strong demand for a product specifically designed for the human resources sector. They develop Cloud technology to assist HR teams in their tasks.

The objective? To enable them to gain in efficiency, reduce their costs, automate the most tedious processes and especially provide a better level of service to employees.

In 2012, PeopleDoc raises 1.5 million euros in Seed from Alven Capital and Kernel Capital Partners. Then, in 2014, the company will expand internationally by offering its software worldwide. It raises $17.5 million in Series B, with Accel Partners as lead investor.

In August 2015, the firm is sponsoring the Employee File Management Survey. This study aims to better understand the impact of technology on Human Resources.

A new Series C fund raising28 million, takes place in September 2015. The main investor is Paris-based Eurazeo, but previous investors Accel Partners, Alven Capital and Kernel Capital Partners are also responding to the call.

The acquisition by Ultimate Software

In 2018, PeopleDoc is acquired by another company specializing in HR solutions: Ultimate Software, listed on NASDAQ. The American firm acquires PeopleDoc for $300 million in cash and shares.

This HR software dinosaur, founded in 1990 and listed on the stock exchange since 1998, is known for its UltiPro solution offered in SaaS since 2002. This platform allows to manage all aspects of human resourcesfrom payments to schedules to employee performance.

There are two reasons why Ultimate Software acquired PeopleDoc. Firstly, by buying this French startup, the American colossus is looking to expand internationally and to attract new customers in Europe.

Furthermore, knowing that the two companies do not quite offer the same solutions, PeopleDoc comes expand the Ultimate Software catalog. The latter now distributes PeopleDoc services to its own clients.

Prior to its acquisition by Ultimate Software, PeopleDoc had approximately 1,000 companies among its clients representing a total of 4 million employees. It now serves Ultimate Software’s 4100 customers representing approximately 38 million employees.
